Leviathan Rides....Again

If it was at all tough to gauge the impact of Lance Armstrong’s return to the sport from the smattering of mainstream media coverage he received this week, then perhaps a better pulse check of Mr. Tour D France’s homecoming could be taken here at Interbike – ground zero for the entire cycling industry each year in Las Vegas. Thousands of movers and shakers who literally propel the sport forward gather annually in the lingering heat of the desert summer to fashion what the sport will look and sound like in the coming year. From the moment those in attendance touched down here in Sin City, cellphones began pinging – “Lance is here.”

Lance’s Decision is Cycling’s Gain

There was no one more surprised that I was when Lance Armstrong was forced to come clean and admit he was making a comeback in 2009. The one question on everyone’s lips was, “why?”

Has Lance run out of challenges? Maybe he is running short of money, or perhaps he really does want to take his incredible cancer foundation work to the next level, raising even more awareness to his crusade in 2009.

Two and a half years out from his exit from the sport, Lance Armstrong’s name still sends reverberations through the cycling community. Whether it’s the seamy details of his personal life, the news of his recently-opened bike shop, or his appearance at some endurance event, the shine has yet to go off of Lance’s superstardom. But the talk that’s emerged over the past 24 hours or so of the seven-time Tour de France champion being ready to re-enter the peloton is a veritable 7.5 on the Richter scale.
